Project 2005-2-3

Project 2005-2-3: Optimisation of membrane bio-reactor systems for wastewater treatment and reuse
Proponents:
CWWT,UNSW Professor T.D. Waite, Dr J. Guan and Dr S. Chang
SKLEE,SYU Professor T.H. Sun and Dr S.W. Wang
Purpose: Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are now a popular process for wastewater treatment and reuse. However, problems such as membrane fouling limit their application. To fully utilise expertise from both SKLEE and CWWT, this project will focus on optimisation of operational parameters with a view to minimising the extent of membrane fouling. Researches will include:
  1. The influence of operational mode on parameters such as permeates flux, permeate quality, MLSS and viscosity of activated sludge, and oxygen mass transfer.
  2. Investigation of operational performance of different modules, materials and MBR configurations.
  3. Modelling of membrane fouling.
